short fiction
After quite a bit of adolescent fumbling to put words together on paper so to create a coherent dramatic effect, I at last started to sell my science fiction, fantasy and horror to magazines, many now defunct in the way of small press publications. There was a breathless triumph that went with these first sales, a kind of runaway giddiness that has never quite been duplicated in my career.

More short s-f and fantasy are upcoming in Cast of Wonders, Eschatology, Cleis Press and Strange, Weird, and Wonderful
novels
I left off writing short fiction for some while, so to tackle these books. Collaborative writing, good or bad, has an ordeal quality to it, and these works, written with my French Quarter neighbor and friend Robert Asprin, are no exception. It was, of course, an honor to work with someone so established in the field. As for Asprin, I believe he found a peculiar enjoyment writing something other than his usual humorous fare. Bob died in May of 2008 and is much missed.

adult s-f and fantasy
I've debated about segregating these from the rest of my writing. On the one hand, I write erotica using the same methods and standards as any other work I undertake; on the other hand, I have little motive--even a mischievous one--for springing a sexually explicit story on an unsuspecting reader. I am wholly of the belief that adult writing has a legitimate place among literature. In the field of science fiction the high water mark was perhaps reached when Robert Silverberg's carnally frank novel The World Inside received a Hugo nomination. (He withdrew the book from consideration, so as not to split votes with another novel of his, A Time of Changes; this later work would not win, though it would take home the Nebula.)
